July 4th, Sunday, Independent Day and Picnic

Devon Church annual picnic day is on the Independent Day. Independent Day of 2010 was on Sunday, so Sunday Worship Service was held on the picnic ground. Starting with praising the Lord with the guitar music, and the prayer and the sermon were followed.

The main idea of the sermon:
“On July 4, 1776, declaring independence from the Kingdom of Great Britain, the United States of America became the Democratic country and enjoys the freedom.
However, there is more wonderful news of getting freedom in the Bible. It is our individual freedom from the bondage of sin. No one receives this freedom with any good works, but there is only one way by the blood of Jesus Christ shed on the cross. Anyone can receive the freedom and be saved through the grace of the Lord God, by accepting Jesus as the Savior and Lord with our faith.
Please come to see me (Pastor) if you want to accept this miracle good news.”

Sing more praising songs.

These three pictures shows our Worship Service at the picnic field.

Lunch! Yes, it was lunch time after the Worship Service.
The theme of the picnic was “Hawaii,” so there was Kalua Pig. Can you see the pig’s head? It wasn’t a round head, so we can’t see the pig’s head. Everyone was so relieved. The head was flat, but there were ears, eyes and nose. Two Pastors ate the ears which is the best piece of the Kalua Pig, they said.
The pig’s head and The pig’s tail

Beside the pig there were so many different delicious foods that was brought by everyone because this is pot-lack luncheon. After taking the photo of the half of the table, hungry people rushed to the tables.

Without explanation you can see so many people were enjoying their lunch. I think this is only half of the people. Many were wearing Hawaiian T-shirt.

Some smart people were sitting down away from the food table.

It was a beautiful day for the picnic. Because of 90 degree and the wind blowing strongly there weren’t any bugs or mosquitoes. All the children could not sit by the table, they were out on the field running around and playing.

Devon Church has been consisted of many different nationalities and races, so one of the Mexican family brought the Sunshine Piñata. Under the five years old children were trying to break down the Piñata hanging from the tree.

The water filled balloon tossing game – 2 steps back

Potato sack race
5 years old boy couldn’t jump, so walked in the bag. He finished the game.

Geta race
This is Devon Church special race. Almost 60 years ago, one of the first generation made these Geta.

Last one was Hula Dance and Hawaiian songs.

Lord God, thank you for this day letting us have the wonderful and safe picnic.
Thanks for the delicious food!

Nursery 3, Recipe

Today is July 2nd. Hiroko’s husband (Hus) has a plan to pick these hot red peppers and regular green and purple peppers.

Hus is trying to pick a purple pepper from inside of the bush.

These are the first crops from Hus’ garden in 2010 - 2 hot red peppers and green and purple peppers.

These are tomato trees. Tomato trees grow so tall, yet no flowers are found. Hus wants to see some tomato flower soon.

Cucumber trees are also growing tall and many flowers are on the trees.

Green bean’s flowers are very beautiful purple, but Hiroko’s photo won’t show the color purple. Why?

This is Hiroko’s garden on our back porch. The tallest tree is tomato and there is a konnyaku plant, but it is hard to see in this picture.

It’s green, but last Christmas poinsettia is growing nicely.

Shiso, Japanese herb, will not come after 4 or 5 years later, so replanting the shiso in this porch garden. Hopefully the shiso is growing here and comes out next year.

-----------------------------------
It is good to eat salad on a the hot summer day. Today is Friday, so making tuna salad for our dinner today.

On Friday, Jesus was put on the cross.

These tuna salad, tofu with tasty condiments, and spam musubi are our dinner tonight

The purple pepper smells so good that I will use it for tuna salad.

Today’s tuna salad is made with boiled eggs, purple pepper, celery, onion and tuna, and also one hot red pepper.
Mix with mayonnaise, olive oil and black pepper, and then, it’s done.

Tofu condiments – green onion, hot red pepper, green shiso and bonito shave.

What do you think this dinner?
It is said that it is better not to eat red meat more than once a week, so it is very healthy dinner.
However, Hus would like to eat steak tomorrow.

Mitsuko - V. Finally, Mitsuko Met Jesus Christ, recipye

Mitsuko was born in Tokyo but grew up in the Northern Part of country side, Yamagata, Japan. When the time comes Mitsuko wanted to attend a college in Tokyo. It was little problems for Mitsuko’s parents, so they asked her to do many things, such as attending cooking, sewing, and flower arrangement schools. Mitsuko had listened to her parents and finished all these things, and finally left for Tokyo two years later after graduated High School.

Mitsuko’s mother asked her final request to Mitsuko to stay of mother’s sister’s place. Mitsuko loved her aunty, so there was no problem. They had four children, and one, named Teruko is the same age of Mitsuko. Teruko is so kind to Mitsuko taking out all over the Tokyo town.

There are two college nearby their house, one is teaching English literature and another one is Japanese literatures. Mitsuko chose the college teaching English literature located at the top of the hill. Mitsuko passed the entrance test. At the orientation studying, Christianity is mandatory because this college is funded by Christian group in the United States. Mitsuko was surprised to hear that, but it is good to study foreign religins, but Mitsuko thought she should study her own religion, Zen Buddhism first.

The first Christianity class, the professor came into the class and look around with his bright and big eyes. Mitsuko heard later his nickname was Prof. Gaka (“Song of Songs” in Bible) because he wrote interpretation of the books “Song of Songs” and “Ecclesiastes.”

Prof. Gaka listed the titles of books, and said there would be no test and no taking the attendance, but two reports should be submitted on the certain day. One of the reports was from these four books, and other mandatory report regarding “Jesus Christ I see” in the “Four Gospels.”

Mitsuko was thinking Prof Gaka forgot to write the name of the author for the “Four Gospels.” Everyone seemed to understand what Prof. Gaka was doing, so Mitsuko thought it was better not embarrass herself to ask who is the author. Suddenly, someone behind Mitsuko was asking what the name of the author of the Four Gospels. Prof. Gaka’s eyes were brighter and bigger, and looked at the guy behind Mitsuko. Prof. Gaka looked surprised but explained what is the “Four Gospels” and the book of Bible. Mitsuko had never heard the book called “Bible” before. Prof. Gaka’s explanation was little bit hard to understand, but Mitsuko thought that she could find the book at the college book-store.

All the students in the college had to choose one of the supporting circles. Mitsuko was interested to know Prof. Gaka because he had different character than those whom Mitsuko had ever known. She was thinking to join the Christian Circle. Mitsuko attended the circle’s special meeting held that day. It was the farewell prayer meeting for one of the members who was accepted to the Bible college to become a Pastor. Mitsuko was fascinated to hear about his Christian life. His father has passed away at his young age, so his mother had raised him. This mother was against him to become a pastor, but he made a decision to attend this Bible college. Mitsuko didn’t understand it was good to go to the Bible college to become a pastor against his mother’s will. Mitsuko had never been to Christianity prayer meeting. Suddenly someone asked Mitsuko to pray. Mitsuko said,
“I don’t know how to pray, and I’m not a Christian.”
“God listens to anyone’s prayer, especially you. You’re here with God’s leading.”
“Yes. God will surely listen to your prayer” said other person.
Mitsuko prayed, but didn’t remember what and how she prayed.
After the prayer meeting they introduced each other and welcomed Mitsuko. While we had conversation, one of them called Mitsuko a sinner. Mitsuko was surprised and thought why they called someone whom they didn’t know well a sinner. Mitsuko had never done like murder, stealing, wrong things under the law and cause any trouble to others. Mitsuko wondered there must be a special kind of sin to the Christianity.

Time had passed by so quickly. Mitsuko had to start writing reports for Prof. Gaka’s class. Mitsuko finished easily writing the report she chose one. Mitsuko got the Bible at the college book-store, but there was no chapter called the “Four Gospels.” Mitsuko’s friend helped her where the “Four Gospels” located in the Bible. Mitsuko opened the first page of the Gospel of Matthew and was surprised to see so many names. Mitsuko had usually made the family tree before reading the foreign novels or tried to remember the names. Those names in the “Four Gospels” are so difficult to remember and also it is impossible to make the family-tree because there are so many names. Mitsuko asked Prof Gaka how she could start to read. Prof. Gaka told Mitsuko with smiling, many new readers had difficult time to start with Matthew, and suggested to read from chapter five.

Mitsuko was confused even chapter five same as chapter one.
Poor will be happy!?
People who are sad will be happy!?
Gentle will be happy!?
Rejoice to be persecuted and abused!?
What is this? Mitsuko had continuously read forward no matter what. The large crowd followed Jesus and listened to his teaching. Mitsuko could not concept what Jesus did. Who is Jesus, Mitsuko thought? She could not write the report, because she didn’t understand what the Bible tried to tell her. Jesus heals many sick, blind and lame, delivers demons, and performs many miracles such as changing the water to wine, walking on the water, calming the storm, feeding over five thousand people with five loaves of bread and two fish. Is Jesus a magician, Mitsuko thought? Suddenly, the death of Jesus on the cross is mentioned. Why? Why does he have to suffer and die? And then, Jesus came alive three days after his death. That made Mitsuko scared. Mitsuko said to herself it is impossible for the dead to come alive. Mitsuko could not understand and not believe anything mentioned in the “Four Gospels.”
Mitsuko had finally written the report which was one less page than required and mailed it on the date Prof. Gaka had asked. It means the report reached Prof. Gaka one day later. Of course, Mitsuko received the big “F” for the essential subject of Christianity.

Mitsuko remembers one heartache event that happened at the Christian Circle Conference held in the autumn of her 2nd year. One of the male student named Nishijo said, “God is love, and all the human being can be saved and go to the heaven, through the grace of Jesus and who believes in Him.” Mitsuko responded to him, “Jesus was born to a human girl named Mary, so Jesus is a human being. Jesus suffered and died on the cross so miserably, and the Bile mentions he came alive three days later. Mitsuko could not believe that.” Mitsuko felt talking too much, so she shut up after that. However, the next morning Mitsuko’s friend who had invited Mitsuko to the conference came and said, “Nishijo-san was praying all night after the meeting, and asking forgiveness for his loveless words to you.” Mitsuko wanted to say that was not her business, but she didn’t say anything.

Mitsuko finally met Jesus, but didn’t accept Him as her Savior and Lord, yet. Does Jesus answer her question since five years old: To where did Mitsuko’s grand-ma go when she passed away? Where does Mitsuko go after she dies? Why have the many deadly accidents happened to Mitsuko?

Thank You Letter to Mic

Mic-san
Thank you so much for the tasty Japanese snacks for us. Everyone of them loved to eat those snacks. Everybody is glad to hear you are attending the church in Osaka every Sunday.
Thanks from Saturday church cleaning crews. Everybody sends the best regards to you.

Kit said she likes any Japanese snacks, so the left over snacks were given to her. She was so happy.

These men were also enjoying Mic’s snacks because of the peanuts on it.

She was reading Mic’s memo.

----------------------------------
Thanks and hello from the people of Devon Church Leisure Group. Everyone was enjoying Mic’s snack with coffee or tea before the Bible study.
Because of the white chocolate and the salt rice cracker on the white plate, so it looks like only two white plates. But there are Mic’s snack on the plates.

Waking us up with coffee or tea and those goodies, everyone was ready to study the word of God with the book “Pre-Wrath Rapture of the Church”

The day’s lunch was chicken salad sandwich and soup. It was cold day in June, so the warm soup was very good.

-----------------------------------
About Pre-Wrath Rapture of the Church
At the end of the world Jesus will be coming back in the air and He will take the Christians to the Heaven. He will also be back on the earth again.
The Lord God Jesus was born on the earth, and He taught us the things will happen in future: i) He’ll suffer and die on the cross, ii) He’ll be resurrected three days later, iii) He’ll go back to heaven, and iv) He’ll will be back to here again.
The first three, i)-ii)-iii) had already been fulfilled but the last one iv) was not. It will be fulfilled some day. Our Pastor has been teaching the Leisure Group about this prophecy.
In the Bible, there are many books you can read regarding this end time. If you are interested to know further, please read Matthew 24 and Revelation, or the book titled “Left Behind”

Nursery 2, The New Heaven and The New Earth, Recipe

May 24, Tuesday - Was it a special Day?
Yes, it was. The weather was very good and 91 degrees. Florida was only 88. Chicago was warmer than Florida. Hiroko’s husband (Hus.) planted the seeds of tomatoes, peppers, green beans and cucumbers. Hus purchased tomato plants and one bag of compost suggested by neighbor, George. Hus had already put Miracle Grow in the ground with top soil, so it is the double portion of fertilizers. It might bring tasty and good harvest soon.

Hus is thinking with the compost bag and two tomato plants

Neighbor, George and his wife

George told Hus to purchase the pepper plants from the nursery nearby.
Here is a sweet pepper plant and a cayenne pepper plat

Cucumber seeds and green bean seeds was also planted

Hus’s whole garden

Here is Hiroko’s Nursery on the back porch – Rosemary and Konnyaku

At the end of April Konnyaku potato was planted but there is no sign of anything. It might be frozen during the cold, cold month of May.
--------------------------
We may be eating fruits and vegetables in the New Heaven and the New Earth.
One of the Jesus disciples named John saw the new heaven and new earth through inspiration from Spirit. Here is the description of the part of the new heaven and new earth in Revelation 22:1-5:
1Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life, as clear as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb 2down the middle of the great street of the city. On each side of the river stood the tree of life, bearing twelve crops of fruit, yielding its fruit every month. And the leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations. 3No longer will there be any curse. The throne of God and of the Lamb will be in the city, and his servants will serve him. 4They will see his face, and his name will be on their foreheads. 5There will be no more night. They will not need the light of a lamp or the light of the sun, for the Lord God will give them light. And they will reign for ever and ever. 6The angel said to me, "These words are trustworthy and true. The Lord, the God of the spirits of the prophets, sent his angel to show his servants the things that must soon take place."

Mitsuko - IV Death Around Mitsuko - Recipe

Mitsuko has a water-phobia, so she can’t swim because it is so hard to put her face in the water and very uncomfortable taking shower. Mitsuko’s experiences made her water-phobia she thinks.
At the age of eight, Mitsuko’s mother took Mitsuko and her younger sister Keiko, gathering shellfishes at low tide at sea, called shiohigari in Japanese during her summer vacation. Mitsuko’s family lived close to Tokyo bay where they could go shiohigari every day during low tide. It was lot of fun putting a small rake into the sand and dig, and then, there were so many shells on the sand. Picking those shells up and tossing into their small bucket made anyone amused.
The year the event happened, Mitsuko’s brother was still a baby, so her mother said to Mitsuko,
“If you can take care Keiko, you can go shiohigari.”
“Where will you be, then?” Mitsuko asked.
“I’ll be sitting and watching for you at the seashore with your baby brother.”
“Well, good! I can take care of Keiko.”
They all went to the sea for shiohigari. The mother said anxiously to Mitsuko,
“Please stay close to shore and look at me all the time.”
“O.K., mother. Don’t worry!” said Mitsuko proudly to go to sea by herself for shiohigari with taking care of younger sister.
There were more shells they could catch than usual, so Mitsuko and Keiko forgot themselves in shiohigari.
“So many shells we picked today” said Mitsuko to Keiko.
“I love to do shiohigari. Sis, thank you for taking care of me.”
“O.K. I’m glad you came with me. Let’s dig some more.”
“We can have tasty soup tonight.” Mitsuko and Keiko continued digging for many shells. In the beginnng, Mitsuko looked at mother and waved their hand, but forgot to look at mother for there were too many shells to gather.
Suddenly, Mitsuko realized she couldn’t see shells in the hole she dug. The hole was filling with the water. Keiko said,
“I can’t pick the shells any more. The water …”
“Yes, me too. What is going on?”
Mitsuko was looking around. There was no one. She looked at the seashore, it was far, far away, and their mother seemed waving her hand and saying something. Mitsuko could not see and hear their mother well. She was getting scared.
Within minutes, the water scooped her leg. Mitsuko took Keiko’s hand, and said,
“Keiko, it is terrible. Be strong and walk fast. We can’t run on the sand, but let’s walk fast.” Mitsuko encouraged Keiko and started to walk fast.
Keiko tripped her legs in the sand and started crying, because she couldn’t walk fast.
“Keiko, can’t walk with crying. Stop crying!”
“But… But…”
“I have so many shells, and you are not a baby any more and I can’t carry you.”
Mitsuko was trying to walk fast but she also had problem walking fast for the water had already coming up closer to her knee. Several steps later, Mitsuko noticed the water had already been over her knees.
“Keiko. Let’s throw these shells away.”
“Why?”
“It is so heavy I can’t walk fast, and I also have to pull you.” Mitsuko threw all the shells away but carried the small rakes and the bucket.
The water had already come up to the bottom of Mitsuko’s swimming suite. For Keiko the water was around her stomach that Keiko couldn’t walk easily. Mitsuko was very scared and she felt her body was sinking in the water. She felt the death.
At that moment Mitsuko heard theie mother’s voice calling their names.
“Mitsuko. Keiko.” Mitsuko looked up and saw their mother’s face clearly. Mitsuko thought, “It is safe, now.” She wanted to cry but started to walk with endurance. At last they could reach the seashore and run to their mother, and Mitsuko said,
“Why didn’t you come? I was so scared” and then her tear was rolling down her cheeks. However, their mother softly and slowly said,
“I was watching, and knowing that you both were safe.”
“But, but the waster came up to Keiko’s chest.”
“Mitsuko, did you see your around? Many children were swimming in the water.”
“Well, but …!” said Mitsuko with tears.
“Sis, threw all the shells” said Keiko to their mother. Mother told Keiko,
“It was a good for her decision. I was thinking about throwing the shells earlier. Throwing the shells made you walk better, didn’t it, Keiko?”
Mitsuko had two other experiences of drowning; one was in the river in front of the house of Hokkaido’s Grand-parents. Other one was at the pond in the mountain at the back of the house of Yamagata’s uncle. These experiences made Mitsuko freeze by the water. Mitsuko felt the death in those experiences, too. The thought of putting the foot in the bottom of the river and pond made Mitsuko shiver.

Mitsuko had many death experiences not only with water but also the heights. Mitsuko had interesting experience of the reason to be scared of dangers of heights. At the age of five, Mitsuko’s mother took Mitsuko to a department-store for shopping. Her mother had to go to the washroom with Mitsuko’s younger sister. Mitsuko waited in front of the washroom to watch a beautiful Japanese dolls. She lost track of how long she was standing there waiting for her mother. Her mother wasn’t there. She was getting scared and tried to look for her mother. She was running around inside the department.
When her mother came out of the washroom, Mitsuko wasn’t there. Her mother went to a department clerk asking for help. They found Mitsuko in the top floor administration office. The administration clerk found Mitsuko at the roof garden crying and looking down the street. She didn’t know how to get out from the department thinking her mother might be out on the street.
Since the experience on the top of a building or a mountain-top, Mitsuko would have a strange feeling of what’s at the bottom of it. Mitsuko loves the mountain climbing but being always careful at the top of the mountain. Mitsuko’s friends have always been holding her hand at the top of the mountain. In their eyes Mitsuko seemed to jump down from there.

Living all her life was facing death. Mitsuko thinks that her experience with Grand-ma’s death in Yamagata at the age of four years old has affected her life. It is a question that Mitsuko had experienced near death accidents many times because of her thought of death. In her twenties she was fascinated by the thought of committing suicide.

Mitsuko has been looking the life after death since Granma’s death and she found it in the Lord Jesus. After Mitsuko gave her life to the Lord Jesus, she was still caught by the thought of death. That thought doesn’t scare her at all. There is the life with Jesus and it is hope and peace in her life. As long as Mitsuko has the purpose which is worshipping the Lord Jesus in her life she can keep living in here. Someday when Mitsuko faces death she knows the Lord Jesus will take care of her on her behalf.
The following Bible verses gave her such comport even though Mitsuko is thinking about the death.
John 3:16 & 17
"For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through Him."

However, Mitsuko is still scared of the water and height. She doesn’t know what to do it.

In the end, I’d like to say that it wasn’t good for me to received Jesus Christ as my savior and the Lord without resolving my idea of sinner. I haven’t really understood the LOVE of Christ. However, by the grace of God, I really understood right now the LOVE of Christ when I realized that I am a big sinner since my birth.
Give praise and thank to the Lord God Jesus Christ for his patient.

“Frog” – “Kaeru” – Return, Recipe

It is very interesting to see many Japanese American 3rd Generation practicing Japanese customs. One of the lady among such group became 60 years old, so the group members gave the surprise party for her.

What is this?

This is two kinds of frog made with dollar bill. This lady is living in Las Vegas, and loves gamble and of course “frog”. Dollar ($100, $50, and $20) bills frogs are given to her as good luck birthday present.

“Frog” is “Kaeru” in Japanese, and “Kaeru” means “to be returned.” Many gamblers believe “Kaeru” can be good luck charm bringing back miraculously the money lost before. Therefore, they are taking any kinds of frogs to the gambling places.

Hiroko’s friend takes about 10 different kinds of “Frogs” to the Casino, and she pats on the slot machine with one of her favorite “Frog” before start to gamble. Believe the “Frog” or not, she is one of the lucky ladies.

The surprised “Frog” party was succeeded at Italian restaurant. They decorated the party room with many frog pictures, and there were “Frog” pictures on table cloth, “Frog” picture on party favor’s bag, etc.

-----------------------------
In the Bible there is not found the commandment regarding drinking, smoking and gambling. However, there are mentioned that using the LOT to make a decision.
Acts 1:20-26
20"For," said Peter, "it is written in the book of Psalms, 'May his place be deserted; let there be no one to dwell in it,' and, ‘May another take his place of leadership' 21Therefore it is necessary to choose one of the men who have been with us the whole time the Lord Jesus went in and out among us, 22beginning from John's baptism to the time when Jesus was taken up from us. For one of these must become a witness with us of his resurrection."
23So they proposed two men: Joseph called Barsabbas (also known as Justus) and Matthias. 24Then they prayed, "Lord, you know everyone's heart. Show us which of these two you have chosen 25to take over this apostolic ministry, which Judas left to go where he belongs." 26Then they cast lots, and the lot fell to Matthias; so he was added to the eleven apostles.
